Wallace Breem Memorial Award
Winner of the 2016 Award announced
The Wallace Breem Memorial Award has been awarded to the Institute of Advanced Legal Studies Library.
Laura Griffiths and Katherine Read received the award from Karen Palmer, President of BIALL, at BIALL’s First Night Dinner which took place at the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel in Dublin on the 9th June 2016. Reflecting the thoughts and deliberations of the Adjudication Panel for this award, Karen Palmer said:
The Wallace Breem Memorial Award is presented every two years and is sponsored by The Inner Temple and BIALL. It is designed to recognize especially good contributions to law librarianship, special research or other projects. This year the Award will be presented to a library service in recognition for two ongoing projects that it administers with care and diligence, which are of great benefit to BIALL members across the UK and Ireland.
The first is the compilation of the Current Awareness column, which is published in Legal Information Management. Katherine Read and Laura Griffiths have been producing this column in LIM for nearly ten years. The column highlights recent publications of interest to legal information professionals, which are arranged by key theme. It has been described as “terrifically useful” and has been praised for its “impressive number of pertinent articles”.
This award is also being presented for the annual BIALL / SLS Survey of Academic Law Libraries, which has been administered by David Gee and Laura Griffiths since 2011. This survey provides a snapshot of staffing levels, expenditure, subscriptions and services provided by academic law libraries in the UK and Ireland. It is the only survey of its kind and provides data that academic librarians can to use to bench-mark their own services; something which can be invaluable, particularly if budgets are being squeezed. The report is published each year in the winter edition of LIM, and is made available to BIALL members via the BIALL website.
I’m very pleased to announce that the Wallace Breem Award 2016 is awarded to the Institute of Advanced Legal Studies Library.
About the Award
The Wallace Breem Memorial Award is presented every two years and is sponsored by The Inner Temple and BIALL. The Award, worth £600, is designed to recognise especially good contributions to law librarianship, or provide financial assistance for special research or other projects at doctorate level or above. The broad terms of the Award allow the adjudication panel to consider the widest range of publications, projects in-hand or proposed, assistance with travel or research costs, and so on.
The Award was inaugurated in 1990 in memory of Wallace Breem, former librarian of The Inner Temple Library and a founder member of BIALL who, at various times, held the offices of Secretary, Treasurer, Chairman, Vice-President and President.
