Outline:

Most if not all organisations are struggling to come to terms with an ever increasing volume of hardcopy and electronic information on a day-to-day basis. In the age of the paperless office, we are now creating, distributing and receiving three times more hardcopy material than were 10 years ago, and 25 times more digital information.  Unfortunately, organisations are now starting to pay the price of their 'laissez-faire' approach to distributed document management and the governance and control issues that it engenders, and not a week goes by without a major information loss hitting the headlines.

To combat this problem and manage the information avalanche, far more robust information governance regimes are required along with the return of good records management principles and practices. Information governance is about ensuring that an organisation manages its information resources and products according to a set of rules, guidelines, standards and polices; Assesses and manages risk; ensures that privacy, confidentiality and legislative standards are followed; and that staff are aware of, and comply with, their responsibilities.
