Outline:

Copyright is a crucial consideration when managing information, especially within the context of a legal practice. It can however be a difficult area in which to feel confident that every regulation is understood and is being observed.

Andrew will look at the background to UK copyright law, with emphasis on specific areas that have relevance to information professionals. It is always important to know what is and isn’t permitted in regard to reproducing published material and the session will provide guidance on the key issues for consideration and how to ensure that copyright infringement does not occur.

The Copyright Licensing Agency performs a crucial function in acting as an intermediary between rightsholders and users of copyright publications. Andrew will explain the role that CLA plays in promoting best practice in managing copyright and providing wider access to the knowledge and information that a huge range of organisations require and value.

The newly launched Law Licence has been developed in consultation with The Law Society and is designed to meet the current needs of legal practices in respect of the copying and circulation of published media. The presentation will detail how the Law Licence can enhance the ability to use existing sources of legal information, complement other knowledge management solutions and ensure copyright compliance within legal practices.
