"Implementing a KM Owned Intranet"
Sarah Rudman – Field Fisher Waterhouse
Sarah Rudman is the KM Systems Content Manager for Field Fisher Waterhouse LLP, and is responsible for FFW’s Intranet, enterprise search and other knowledge systems. She has over 10 years of experience in the information field in the US and UK. Sarah has previously managed the intranet and library systems at the accountancy firm Baker Tilly, and has also held positions at The College of Law.
Outline:
The workplace is consistently becoming a more social area due to technology. People are now beginning to expect the same technology at work as they have access to at home. With this idea in mind, the KM team at Field Fisher Waterhouse set about bringing working practices up to date with technology at home by implementing a new intranet to reflect these changes in technology. In a phased approach, FFW is taking steps towards a more social intranet by introducing Web 2.0 to its members.
Prior to the update, the firm’s intranet has consisted mostly of static content maintained by an older generation content management system. It has also been largely owned by the Information Technology department. Our goals are to bring the intranet under the KM umbrella, with the KM team leading the way. PSLs and IOs are now responsible for content, and with a large amount of current awareness being delivered through the intranet, the intranet should soon be a tool for knowledge within the firm.
The first phase of the project has covered the implementation of the new content management system, introducing RSS feeds and personalization, and has also covered the transfer of content ownership.
The second and further phases will see ongoing personalization as well as exploring wikis and other types of social software in an intranet and KM environment.
Sarah will cover managing the various aspects of the new intranet, including:
- Personalization on the intranet
- RSS and blogs on the intranet
- Shifting content ownership and KM as content manager
- Where to go next
