It is always flattering to be asked to apply for an internal promotion – but those invitations don’t always come unsolicited. In fact, making yourself visible within your organisation and ensuring you are seen as eligible and ready for that next step is a skill in itself.

This session will examine the practical steps that delegates can take to ensure that they know what their skills are, understand what skills are needed in the new role they aspire to, and begin to learn what actions they can take to bridge any gaps, including exercises for the delegates to take away.

The presentation will then address internal self-marketing and promotion techniques to meet this goal. The use of blogs, wikis and other web2.0 tools to position yourself as an active, engaged and knowledgeable member of staff will be explored.

Once you have honed your skills, and a promotional opportunity has been identified, there is then the need to negotiate the minefield of internal applications. The session will identify tips and techniques for successful completion of application forms and positive performance at internal interviews or review boards, including:

  • What information will the interview panel be using to judge your application – and what will they be ignoring?
  • Why application forms are used and what employers are looking for
  • How to perform well in competency based interviews – the STAR principle
  • Asking your own questions – just as important
