BIALL Overseas Conference Bursaries
BIALL personal members are encouraged to consider making applications for bursaries to allow attendance at overseas law library conferences. Members are invited to apply for bursary for any of the major conferences held by related Associations including:
- American Association of Law Libraries (AALL) 23-26 July 2011
- Canadian Association of Law Libraries (CALL) 15-18 May 2011
- Australian Law Librarians Association (ALLA) 28-30 September 2011
- International Association of Law Libraries (IALL) 4-8 December 2011
Applications for bursaries for other Law Library Association Conferences will also be considered. The following link provides listings, courtesy of IALL, of conferences and events that may be of interest: IALL Calendar
Members should note that these bursaries are not intended to cover all conference expenses. The applicant will need to contribute additional funds to help cover the cost of attending these conferences.

Criteria for applications: in order for the Committee to make a decision, applicants are expected to submit a detailed application explaining their particular interest in attending the conference of their choice.
Closing date for applications: your application should be submitted to Judith Lowe, Vice Chair of the Awards and Bursaries Committee. All applications that are received will be confirmed by e-mail.
Applications are invited throughout the year for consideration by the Awards and Bursaries Committee. The Committee will consider these at various times during the course of 2011 with application deadlines fixed at:
- Fri 4 March 2011
- Fri 8 April 2011
- Fri 13 May 2011
- Wed 10 August 2011
The Committee will aim to meet shortly after these deadlines and applicants will be advised soon afterwards about whether, or not, they have been granted an award.
Awarding of bursaries: In awarding a bursary the Committee may base its decision on a number of factors including:
- the quality of the application
- whether, or not, an applicant has received a BIALL bursary in recent years. Preference may be given to those who have not benefited from a bursary in the past.
- if there is an expectation of future commitment and performance in the law library profession
- proven or potential contribution to and /or participation in the Association's activities
- the ability to be a good ambassador for BIALL, including being prepared to participate in conference sessions and activities
All bursary recipients are expected to write a report that may be published in the BIALL Newsletter, or LIM.
Notification: all applicants will be informed of the Committee's decision regarding their request for a bursary.
