Nominations & Volunteers
Nominations & Volunteers
The Nominations and Volunteer's Committee is chaired by BIALL's Past President, currently David Wills. This committee has the following aims:
- To encourage BIALL Members to contribute to the aims and activities of BIALL by joining one of our committees;
- To seek suitable candidates to fill strategic positions within BIALL - notably the positions of President, President Elect, Hon. Secretary and Hon. Treasurer, and Council members;
- To act as a central reference point to which Members can be directed for information on volunteering;
- To attend to issues of succession planning for committees and Council members.
As we are a voluntary organisation, with no salaried staff, we do actively encourage members of BIALL to join one of our several committees, such as the Awards and Bursaries Committee, the BIALL Website Committee, Legal Information Group (LIG), Legal Information Management Editorial Board, Membership Services (MS), PR and Promotions, the Publications Committee and Professional Development (PD). Members who do join our committees greatly value the opportunity to become more professionally engaged with the issues facing the legal information industry and, in addition, there can be range of new skills to develop too. The advantages with being involved are:
- Attending, contributing to and chairing meetings - important skills that could be transferred to day jobs;
- The kudos of being an active member of an internationally recognised professional association;
- Learning valuable, and transferable, new skills such as budgeting and project management;
- Networking with those at the cutting edge of their profession - the BIALL email forum, wikis and blogs provide valuable resources and support for our members in many possible ways.
Getting involved in a BIALL committee involves a commitment. You would need to attend meetings which take place, on average, four times a year. Although most BIALL members get involved in BIALL activities during their lunch breaks or in their free time, our meetings do tend to take place during the working week. The length of the meetings can vary. All reasonable travel expenses relating to attendance at these meetings, wherever they maybe held, are covered by BIALL.

Annual Nominations Process
The annual nominations process for BIALL Officers and Council members begins in the first two months of the calendar year. The deadline of nominations is at the beginning of April which provides sufficient time for an election to take place should more than one nomination be received for a particular post. Whether or not a n election is required, the final list of nominations are approved at the BIALL AGM which takes place during the BIALL Confernece in June and the new post-holders take up office one week later in accordance with the BIALL Constitution.
