Betty Moys Fund

The Betty Moys Fund was established for the purpose of funding overseas professional visits for members of the British and Irish Association of Law Librarians.

Elizabeth Mary Moys MBE, who was known to all as Betty, was one of the giants of the law library profession. She died quite suddenly on 1st February 2002 following a period of ill-health. Betty's contribution to the library and indexing professions was vast but, perhaps, she will be remembered most for her "Moys Classification and Thesaurus for Legal Materials" which has been adopted by so many law libraries throughout the world. This work was originally published in 1968 under the title of "A Classification Scheme for Law Books" and reached a 4th edition by 2001just prior to her death.

A full account of Betty's life and career can be found in Legal Information Management, Vol. 2, No.1, Spring 2002, pages 4-7 entitled In Memoriam: Elizabeth Mary Moys 1928 to 2002, written by Barbara Tearle, President of BIALL.

Betty was a founder member of the British and Irish Association of Law Librarians and, following her untimely death, a bequest from her Will was received by the Association. The gift, which is to be used over a period of ten years, is intended to provide financial support to BIALL Members wishing to:

  • Attend an overseas conference, such as AALL, CALL, IALL or JSI
  • Travel and give presentations on a particular law library project at an overseas conference or meeting.

Previous awards made from the Betty Moys Funds
