The historic Middle Temple is one of the four Inns of Court which have the exclusive right to call men and women, who have completed the necessary academic qualifications, to the Bar of England and Wales. This entitles them, after a period of pupillage (vocational training) to practise as Barristers. As well as calling men and women to the bar, Middle Temple is a members’ organisation for barristers and provides them with various services and amenities. One of these is Middle Temple’s library which provides access to 250,000 books, journals and law reports as well as a variety of online legal databases to members of the Inns.

We are now looking to recruit an Assistant Librarian to administer all aspects of the operation and configuration of the Library’s cataloguing systems, SIRSI Dynix Symphony Workflows and Enterprise. The post holder will play a key role in the project to implement a classification scheme using the Moys Classification system and provide cataloguing assistance to the Cataloguer. The role also involves working at the Enquiry Desk, providing a legal reference service to members of the four Inns of Court. Some lifting and moving/re-shelving of books will be required.  

It is essential that you have a graduate degree in library/information studies and experience with the administration of SirsiDynix Symphony Workflows and Enterprise, or with an equivalent LMS. You will have strong cataloguing skills, and knowledge of Library of Congress subject headings and MARC21. You will be flexible, have strong organisational skills and excellent customer service skills. You will be comfortable communicating with people at all levels (including very senior barristers, judges and other distinguished individuals from various backgrounds).

Full Job Description

Organisational Relationships

The Assistant Librarian reports to the Librarian, collaborates closely with library colleagues, including those of the other Inns, and works with other Inn staff members.

Main Duties

Enterprise and Symphony Workflows Administration

  • Manage technical configuration, customise aspects of Symphony Workflows and Enterprise and manage user configuration and access
  • Run reports and manage the reporting module
  • Serve as the technical liaison with SirsiDynix, and manage cases and updates using SIRSI’s Support Centre
  • Resolve problems and queries from staff and members, and make adjustments as necessary
  • Provide technical expertise and training as required for new and existing members of staff
  • Develop Symphony Workflows and Enterprise to enhance access to collections, delivery of services, dissemination of information, communication with members and to improve internal operations
  • Keep skills updated by using SirsiDynix Mentor 2.0 and webinars
  • Represent the library at COSI (Customers of SirsiDynix International)
  • Make use of appropriate metrics to track activity and use of the catalogue by members
  • Upload and update records to COPAC and other union catalogues as required

Classification Project

  • Assist with the Moys classification project by managing the workflow, amending individual catalogue records and labelling books
  • Update authority file records, including name and subject authority control work and contributing records to Symphony Workflows
  • Implement and maintain Library of Congress Subject Headings, modified using Westlaw’s Taxonomy as required
  • Assist the cataloguer with the mass-edit of catalogue records using MarcEdit
  • Label, move and reshelve books in order to implement the classification scheme

Enquiry Desk Duties

  • Provide a legal reference service by assisting members with their legal research enquiries (in-person, phone and email)
  • Instruct library users in the effective use of databases and online resources
  • Assist in user engagement activities, seeking feedback on the catalogue and information services
  • Comply with copyright and data protection regulations
  • Provide member feedback about the library’s services to the Librarian and colleagues
  • On a rota basis, carry out Document Delivery requests

Additional Duties

  • Assist with contributing content for the social media accounts
  • Shelve books and keep the library neat and orderly
  • Assist with stock moves when required (some heavy lifting)
  • Adhere to the Inn’s approved policies and procedures, as amended from time to time
  • Undertake such other duties as appropriate to the grade and character of the work as may be reasonably required

Person Specification

Qualifications & Experience

Essential

  • Master’s degree in library and information studies
  • One year of experience in a law library or other legal environment providing similar services
  • Experience with the administration of SirsiDynix Symphony Workflows and Enterprise, or with an equivalent LMS
  • Cataloguing experience (including use of Library of Congress Subject Headings and MARC21)

Desirable

  • Knowledge of the Inns and their functions
  • Knowledge of best practices in user experience
  • Experienced with Moys classification and Westlaw taxonomy
  • Experience implementing cloud computing technologies

Skills

Essential

  • Good range of librarianship skills
  • Knowledge of Library of Congress Authority Files, Virtual International Authority Files, WorldCat, COPAC and other online cataloguing tools
  • Good range of librarianship and research skills
  • Excellent administrative skills and high level of organisation
  • Strong IT literacy and analytical skills

  • Knowledge of RDA Cataloguing Rules
