Role Summary

The Library and Knowledge Services team is a global function comprised of eight people, who together are responsible for ensuring that everyone in the firm has the knowledge, information and resources they need in order to complete their work to the highest possible standards.

The main responsibility of this role is to supervise and lead the global Library and Knowledge Services team while the Head of Library and Knowledge Services is on maternity leave.  The team has recently expanded both within the London office and overseas and a key focus for this role will therefore be to bring together staff into a coordinated global team.

The Library and Knowledge Services Team Leader will have responsibility for five members of staff in London, one in the USA and one in Singapore.

Areas of focus and responsibilities

Service Delivery

  • Ensuring delivery of a first-class library and knowledge service across the firm with high levels of service consistently provided to staff in all offices, regardless of location
  • Managing the global Library and Knowledge Services team, running appraisals, team meetings (local and global), and overseeing staff development
  • Overseeing the implementation, globally, of the Library and Knowledge Services team business plan for 2016/17
  • Continue to maintain and build relationships between the Library and Knowledge Services team and other support departments within the firm

Managing Resources

  • Setting the library budgets for the EU/Asia region for financial year 2017/18
  • Overseeing library spend to ensure that budgets are adhered to globally
  • Maintaining relationships with vendors for key online library subscriptions
  • Providing support and advice to the rest of the Library & Knowledge Services team, as required, in their negotiations with other vendors

Research and Training

Working alongside the rest of the Library and Knowledge Services Team to:

  • Assist lawyers with their legal research enquiries
  • Provide reports and other information for use in business development and marketing activities
  • Deliver a timely and accurate current awareness service to lawyers and support staff
  • Ensure the delivery of training to lawyers and support staff on the library and knowledge management resources

Knowledge Management

Working with the Director of Business Transformation and Knowledge Management and the team's Knowledge Advisor and Knowledge Assistant to:

  • Drive and encourage use of the firm's new knowledge management system
  • Encourage the ongoing development of tools and techniques for the dissemination of knowledge within the firm

Technical skills and experience required

  • Educated to degree level (or equivalent)
  • Masters in Library or Information Science desirable but not essential
  • Strong experience of working within law firm libraries and a keen interest in the wider law librarianship profession
  • Experience of managing teams; ideally within a global setting
  • Able to communicate with people at all levels of seniority and understands the needs and sensitivities required to work within a global team
  • Experience of managing library budgets and negotiating contracts for library resources
  • Pro-active, customer-focused attitude
  • Excellent IT skills, with good knowledge of the major databases for library and business development research
  • Able to work to deadlines, manage multiple projects and deliver under pressure

The Essentials

  • 9.30am to 5.30pm but flexibility is a must
  • 12 week probation period
  • 9 month fixed term contract
