The BIALL Professional Development Committee are teaming up with NetIKX to offer a seminar analysing recent developments in copyright law, and considering and discussing the consequent implications for the future.

The aim of the seminar will to explore recent changes in copyright law and analyse what these changes can mean to our Members.  We are extremely excited to have Charles Oppenheim and Emily Goodhand presenting and leading the discussions

The price of this course will be £35 + VAT for BIALL members; a booking form with booking instructions is available here.

Topics and Timetable

2 15 - 2 45pm: Recent trends in UK copyright; Digital Economy Act and its possible implications; Hargreaves Review – text and data mining and other exceptions to copyright  by Charles Oppenheim

2 45 - 3 15pm: Recent key cases (Meltwater v NLA, Infopaq, Premier League) and the international context; Hargreaves review – licensing, Digital Copyright Exchange by Emily Goodhand

3 15 - 3 30pm: Tea break

3 30 - 4 15pm: Group discussions, focusing on two key questions:  what are the current problems and frustrations caused to you by copyright; and how will these changes affect your day to day jobs – plus any other issues the groups wish to highlight

4 15-4 45pm: Plenary report back

4 45 - 5pm: Conclusion

5:00pm: Networking, drinks and nibbles

Speakers' Biographies

Our first speaker Charles Oppenheim (NetIKX Emeritus Member) will be no stranger to many BIALL and NetIKX members, having spoken at a number of our events in the past.  Charles recently retired from his role as Professor of Information Science at Loughborough University in 2009, although in his retirement he still maintains an extensive portfolio of professional responsibilities such as Visiting Professor at Queensland University, membership of the UK Libraries and Archives Copyright Alliance, the European Commission's Legal Advisory Board and the team that negotiates licences with the CLA on behalf of the higher education sector. Charles is a widely published and cited speaker on intellectual property rights.

Our second speaker Emily Goodhand has been listed in The Times as one of the top ten legal tweeters for her @copyrightgirl Twitter channel. Emily holds the post of Copyright and Compliance Officer at the University of Reading, where she specialises in delivering workshops on copyright, developing policies and advising on a range of complex copyright and licensing issues. Emily has spoken at many events and panels, and has contributed to legal publications such as The Lawyer's blog and the 1709 copyright blog. Emily currently sits as the Vice-Chair of the Libraries and Archives Copyright Alliance, and led their submission of evidence to the Hargreaves Review.
